Ratbite lay alone in the elder's den, leaning against a tree and closing his eyes in the shade. The shadows danced across his face, which was by no means 'handsome' or 'pretty'. He didn't have many friends. In fact, there was only one cat he would truly call his friend. Turtleclaw was out hunting, not having a lot of time to visit anymore but making time when she could. He was proud of his last apprentice, she had made a life for herself. Yet here he sat in the shadows.
Oh, Ratbite knew he had lived a good life, and if he could do it all again he wouldn't change a thing. But he did have his share of regrets...didn't everyone? Ratbite wished he didn't loathe his sisters, the beautiful queens, and he wished he might have taken the time to settle down with a mate and kits of his own. But he hadn't. He had never seen what the big deal was about...if you were a warrior why would you spend time in the nursery with your mate and kits? You had more important things to do. Hearing stories from the other elders had made his mind expand, and now he understood. Not perfectly, but more than he did. The kits were your own flesh and blood. You made them, and you were responsible for them. He sighed, his warm breath hitting the tree and fanning back in his face.
He didn't take any time to leave the elder's den like the others...they basked in the sun in the middle of camp, or sought out their many friends to swap tongues and stories. But he had never left the elder's den. He was comfortable, and he lived a long enough life as a loyal warrior to have memorized every detail of his camp. He didn't need the daily reminders. Maybe just once he could go see the new kits...he shook his head to clear the thoughts. His ears flicked as he realized he was alone. Well and truly alone. He didn't hear a sound...and a sudden wave of coldness swept through him leaving him utterly saddened. He should have taken the time to be nice to people.

Featherpelt padded up to Ratbite, sensing his unhappiness. "You should go out into the clearing. The air is nice and fresh... everyone's well fed. The kits are getting adventurous enough to travel outside the nursery. I think it'd be good for you." Featherpelt hoped that she wouldn't have to deal with a nasty retort. "Please," She added. Hopefully Ratbite would think he was doing her a favor by getting some fresh air, and being around some clan mates. In a way, he would be. She would have one less cat to worry about. Her thoughts went back to her almost emty herb store; she would need some apprentices to help her bring back some herbs. Which reminded her; was she ready for her own apprentice?

Ratbite had to bite back a sarcastic remark; he sensed the she-cat was genuine. He narrowed his eyes at her, silently asking why she would want to help him in any way. He knew Featherpelt, knew who she was, but that didn't mean much. Rising to his feet with a few loud cracks and winces, he stood a little over eye level with her. "I suppose it wouldn't be horrible..." he told her, sugarcoating the fact that he really wanted to go out. He had just needed an excuse.
Striding past her without waiting for a reply, he limped out into the middle of the clearing and was soon surrounding by darting cats of all sizes and colors. For a while he wanted to go back, but he forced himself to stand ground. He hadn't been a strong warrior for so many moons just to wimp out over his own clanmates. Flicking his wiry tail, he dipped a brown head in greeting to a passing cat. He looked around, hoping to see Turtleclaw's familiar green-tainted fur among the rainbow of colors, but no such luck came to him. He sighed, sitting down and deciding not to go back for little while. He could enjoy the feeling of the sun on his back.

Good Featherpelt thought, pleased with herself that Ratbite had gotten out of the den. She shadowed him a little, making sure he wasn't too startled by all of the activity going around in the camp. She could tell he was disappointed the way his shoulders drooped, and his tail dragged the ground. "Something the matter?" Featherpelt asked.

Ratbite turned to the medicine cat, ever respectful of her position in the clan but not ready yet to give up his snarkiness. Rising to his paws with a few creaks, he winced as a particularly loud one echoed around the camp. Wiry brown hair stuck out in every direction as his ears perked toward her, working hard to catch the words she had shared with him. He was slowly going deaf...but he would never admit it. He was strong.
"Nothing is the matter."
His snap had been meant to scare her away, but when she gave him a knowing smirk he realized she had no intention of leaving. Groaning aloud to show his disappointment, he crashed onto his rear ungracefully and finally allowed his eyes to cloud over with the pain he had been feeling over the last couple of moons. The once sharp, white teeth that had killed so much prey for his clan were now chipped and yellow, and a few in the back were rotting away to painful stumps. His eyesight wasn't as it had once been either, his right eye was barely able to see anything.
Knowing the medicine cat would try to help him had kept him from admitting his weaknesses, but he could hide them no longer. The pain was threatening to overwhelm him and he could stand it no longer. He needed help, and crashing in front of Featherpelt was as close as he would ever get to admitting it.

"Oh Ratbite!" Featherpelt exclaimed. It hurt her to see a Clan member like this. "Whats wrong?" she realized how much she was still like an apprentice. "What hurts?" Featherpelt corrected herself. "What can i fix?" Featherpelt asked. She knew that much of the suffering Ratbite was going through could only be fixed by him. She could only fix the wounds... if only there was more she could do. I'll visit the moonpool soon. she told herself. StarClan would know what to do. She brought her thoughts back to Ratbite. The clouds in his eyes made them look glossy... far-off. She had to help him.

Ratbite coughed, a deep and hoarse sound. Every breath he took had a raspy edge to it, and he could barely see through either of his eyes. He tried to speak to Featherpelt, to tell her what he felt, but he couldn't form words.

Featherpelt knew that there was only so much she could do for Ratbite, and it killed her to know that, but what else could she do? I may not be able to heal him completely, but i can ease his pain! She raced off to her den and returned with some poppy seeds. "Ratbite... i'm not going to lie to you. These," She said nodding towards the poppy seeds, "aren't going to stop your suffering, so don't expect them to. However, they will ease your pain and help you sleep. You need your rest." Featherpelt looked desperatly up to the sky, and remembered that it was sun-high and there were no stars in the sky. StarClan help me... OOC: sorry it took so long to reply! also, can i make Featherpelt have some sort of sign, or recieve the telling of a prophecy etc.?
